Warwick Fellowships: Choose the Right Scheme and Prepare a Host Proposal

Warwick fellowships are not one interchangeable scholarship. Some support researchers already connected to Warwick; others require a host department and an external funder application. Before writing a proposal, identify the exact scheme and the stage of your research career it supports. This independent guide helps with preparation and does not announce that a particular fellowship is open.
Distinguish internal development from hosted fellowships
Warwick's Institute of Advanced Study describes Early Career Fellowships for Warwick PhD graduates and Associate Fellowships for postdoctoral researchers at Warwick. These should not be presented as general awards for every international applicant. Read the individual scheme page to confirm your connection to the university and the timing of your doctorate or appointment.
A department may also support applications to externally funded fellowships. Warwick Chemistry's guidance, for example, describes expressions of interest, academic review and scheme-specific host preparation. Its page marks several rounds as closed. The existence of a fellowship information page therefore does not prove a current deadline is still available. Check the department's current instructions and the funder's rules together.
Create a two-deadline plan
Put the host department's internal deadline and the funder's deadline on separate lines. Add the date by which you must agree a mentor, request references and provide documents for institutional approval. Starting with the external deadline alone can leave too little time for the host's selection process. Do not assume a professor's encouraging reply is formal approval to submit.
Record the source for each date, the named scheme and the call year. If a page uses an old year, ask whether a new call has been announced rather than silently moving the date forward. Keep your own preparation deadline earlier than the official one so you have time to resolve missing evidence or an unavailable referee.
Write a focused host discussion note
Prepare one page covering the research question, why it matters, the approach, the contribution beyond your existing work and why the proposed host is a fit. Identify a realistic first output and a dependency such as access to an archive, dataset, instrument or collaboration. Ask whether that dependency can be supported; do not state it is secured without agreement.
A useful outline is: question; gap in existing work; two objectives; methods; risks and alternatives; expected contribution. Distinguish an ambitious research direction from work that is feasible within the scheme's actual duration. This is a preparation structure, not an official Warwick application form or a replacement for word limits.
Explain independence and readiness
Use the CV and project note to show what you contributed to previous research and what you would now lead. Describe publications accurately, separating published, accepted, submitted and planned work. Account for collaborative contributions without claiming another researcher's methods or results as solely your own. Include career context where the scheme invites it, using its own instructions.
Before requesting host support, send a concise enquiry with the exact scheme, your proposed question and a clear request for a fit discussion. Follow departmental document requirements. Keep a record of approvals, unresolved questions and revised drafts. Strong preparation helps reviewers understand your work, but it cannot guarantee institutional nomination or a funder's award.
