MRC BSU Cambridge PhD Studentships: Funding and Application Guide

MRC BSU refers to the Medical Research Council Biostatistics Unit at the University of Cambridge. An applicant needs to check both the research opportunity and the funding route. Admission eligibility does not automatically establish eligibility for every studentship. This guide combines a dated official-source check with an original preparation worksheet for prospective applicants.
Current call: check the eligibility boundary
Checked on 13 September 2026: the Unit's PhD Opportunities page advertises one funded studentship for UK applicants starting in January 2027, with a closing date of 23:59 on 21 September 2026. It also states that the University funding round for 2026/27 admission has closed and distinguishes overseas candidates who have secured their own funding. Recheck the linked page before relying on these dates.
Do not interpret this particular UK-applicant call as an unrestricted fully funded award for international students. Record your fee-status and funding questions separately, and ask the programme team to clarify anything the current call does not resolve. An old funding amount or a previous year's general deadline is not a substitute for the current opportunity notice.
Prepare a statistical research-fit note
Choose a research theme and identify one question that interests you. Write four short paragraphs covering the scientific problem, the type of data, a statistical difficulty and why the proposed supervisor's work is relevant. You do not need to pretend that you already have the final method or result.
For example, a practice note might discuss missing observations in a fictional health dataset. Explain which missingness information you would need before selecting a method, rather than claiming that one technique always solves the problem. Label this as an initial research idea and identify what further reading would change your approach.
Show what you can already do
Select one coursework, dissertation or employment example demonstrating quantitative preparation. State the question, your personal contribution, the tools used and a limitation you recognised. If you worked in a group, distinguish your analysis from the group's wider output. Use a reproducible, non-sensitive sample where possible.
Prepare a brief code or methods appendix only if the application permits it. Include a README, data provenance and instructions sufficient for someone else to understand the work. Do not publish patient information, restricted research data or code you lack permission to share. A small, carefully explained project is more useful than unexplained screenshots.
Keep the application routes separate
The BSU application FAQ says formal applications must go through the Cambridge application system and advises contacting a prospective supervisor in advance. An encouraging conversation is not an admission offer or a funding award. Track supervisor correspondence, formal submission and funding consideration as separate steps.
Use a checklist with the exact course, proposed start date, official deadline, funding route, required documents and referee status. Verify word limits and document requirements in the current application instructions. Prepare referees early enough for their own submission process and keep a copy of the final confirmation.
Questions to resolve before committing
Ask what costs the specific award covers, whether any fee difference remains and what conditions apply.
