WEHI is recruiting international PhD scholars for 2027 medical biology research in Melbourne. Successful applicants receive a total AUD 43,100 annual living allowance, tuition offset, health insurance and possible relocation support. Applications close 31 October 2026 at 11:59 p.m. AEDT.
WEHI’s International PhD Scholar Initiative invites outstanding international applicants to undertake medical biology research in Melbourne with University of Melbourne enrollment in 2027. Applicants should review WEHI research projects and may nominate up to three supervisors or projects. Contacting a supervisor is encouraged but a firm agreement is not required at initial application. Scholarships are awarded to the strongest candidates after academic and research review and a video interview. The funded package totals AUD 43,100 per year in living allowance and WEHI top-up, plus a university tuition fee offset, health insurance, and up to AUD 3,000 relocation allowance for scholars outside Victoria. Eligibility summary
For applicants who will be international students in Australia and completed or are completing a four-year undergraduate degree with substantial research, or a master’s degree, at an international university. Final-year students completing in first semester 2027 may apply. Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents, New Zealand citizens, and applicants whose most recent degree was at an Australian university are excluded from this initiative. University of Melbourne PhD entry standards apply.
Requirements
Research WEHI projects and nominate up to three preferred projects or supervisors. A supervisor’s agreement is encouraged but not required for initial application. Shortlisted applicants will interview by video and later provide a WEHI supervisor support letter.
Documents required
Cover letter, CV, academic transcripts with grading scale and translation if needed, and two written referee reports using WEHI’s form. The application form gives file naming and upload instructions.
