The University of Newcastle’s Australian Government Research Training Program Academic Pathway Scheme supports incoming PhD researchers with strong academic merit and research potential. Scholars join the Academic Career Preparation pathway alongside their research. A limited number of awards are available; priority is given to recent First Class Honours graduates of Newcastle or equivalent awardees. Commencement for this round is 1 March 2027.

Eligibility summary
Domestic applicants only: Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens, Australian permanent residents or Australian humanitarian visa holders. Must qualify for Newcastle PhD admission, have a supportive Newcastle academic supervisor, align proposed work with a university research priority, and be able to commence on 1 March 2027. Master of Philosophy applicants are ineligible.
Requirements
Submit formal online PhD admission and scholarship application by 30 November 2026, 11:59 p.m. AEST. A prospective supervisor must sign the scheme application form. Priority is given to recent Newcastle First Class Honours graduates or equivalent awardees.
Documents required
Completed Academic Pathway Scheme form with supervisor nomination, research proposal, supervision nomination form, identity and citizenship documents, academic transcripts and certificates, and CV.
