University of Leicester Magnetically Engineered Austenitic Steels PhD Studentship 2027
University of Leicester
Dr Gebril El-Fallah at the University of Leicester is recruiting a PhD researcher to design low-expansion, high-strength austenitic steels for advanced energy systems. The four-year award provides UK-rate tuition, a UKRI-rate stipend and £5,000 per year in research support. International applicants are welcome but must cover the overseas fee difference. Deadline: 15 January 2027.
Join the Alloy Design & Phase Transformations Research Group to investigate how alloy chemistry, microstructure and magnetic behaviour affect thermal expansion and high-temperature strength in austenitic steels. The project combines physical metallurgy, computational thermodynamics and machine learning with thermal, magnetic and mechanical experiments. Dr Gebril El-Fallah supervises the project, with a planned 28 September 2027 start. Apply via the official project page, selecting September 2027 and entering funding code Eng El Fallah. The university states a date but no cutoff time, so submit early.

Eligibility summary
UK and overseas applicants may apply. A first-class or upper-second-class honours degree (or equivalent) in materials science, metallurgy, mechanical engineering, physics or a related subject is required, along with University of Leicester English-language requirements. Interest in metals and numerical data is expected; experience with CALPHAD, Python, microscopy or related methods is useful but not mandatory. Overseas applicants must fund the difference between UK and overseas tuition fees and their own travel, visa and NHS surcharge costs.
