Glasgow ESRC Student-Led Social Science PhD Funding 2026/27
University of Glasgow
University of Glasgow applicants can seek ESRC social-science PhD funding through the 2026/27 SGSSS student-led competition. UKRI-rate stipend, home-rate tuition and research grant; international students must pay the fee difference. Apply with two references by 5 pm on 24 November 2026.
The University of Glasgow is participating in the Scottish Graduate School of Social Science (SGSSS) ESRC student-led open competition. Applicants develop a social-science research proposal with a Glasgow supervisor aligned to an eligible Unit of Assessment. A typical award supports a 3.5-year PhD, or a one-year Master’s plus 3.5-year PhD, with final length set through a development-needs analysis. Apply via SGSSS Apply; Glasgow instructs applicants to await the competition outcome before submitting a separate PhD application to the university. The competition is open now and closes 24 November 2026 at 5 pm.

Benefits
Annual UKRI-rate stipend (around £21,805 for 2026/27), UK home-rate tuition waiver and a £940 research training support grant. The estimated figures for later years are not guaranteed. International-fee students must cover the difference between home and overseas tuition.
Eligibility summary
Secure the support of a University of Glasgow supervisor aligned with a SGSSS-eligible Unit of Assessment; applications without this alignment will be rejected. Glasgow states that international-fee students may apply but must pay the difference between the UK home and international tuition rates, which the university cannot waive for 2027/28 starters. Consult SGSSS competition guidance for further academic and residency criteria.
