The Fettrow Global Change Biogeochemistry Lab at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville is recruiting PhD and/or MS students for Fall 2027 through a fully funded Graduate Teaching Assistantship with a monthly stipend and tuition coverage.
The Fettrow Global Change Biogeochemistry Lab in the Department of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville is recruiting graduate students to join a collaborative and interdisciplinary research team beginning in Fall 2027.
Available research directions include: (1) wildfire impacts on forest biogeochemical cycles; (2) Arctic-region warming and permafrost soil thaw; and (3) coastal wetland blue-carbon cycling under sea-level rise.

UT graduate assistantships at qualifying appointment levels also include waivers of maintenance, tuition, mandatory fees, and differential tuition for the appointment period under university policy.
Eligibility summary
Open to prospective PhD and MS applicants with a background in geology, chemistry, biology, microbiology, soil and plant science, environmental science, or a closely related discipline. Applicants should be interested in collaborative global-change biogeochemistry research and be able to meet University of Tennessee graduate admission requirements.
Requirements
Relevant academic preparation in geology, chemistry, biology, microbiology, soil and plant science, or a similar field. Interest in remote fieldwork, including occasional multi-day campaigns. Interest in analytical chemistry bench work and greenhouse experiments. Strong motivation to learn and grow in a collaborative, respectful, welcoming, and diverse research group. Preferred: research or educational experience in plant–soil chemistry and biogeochemistry, plus experience with both fieldwork and analytical chemistry bench analyses.
