12–24 months of research in Japan for UK-based humanities and social sciences researchers. JSPS offers ¥362,000 monthly maintenance, round-trip airfare and ¥200,000 settling-in allowance. Apply through the British Academy by 2 December 2026, 17:00 GMT.
The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science funds cooperative research with a Japanese host at a university or research institution. The British Academy is the overseas nominating authority for this humanities and social sciences call. Fellowships begin between 1 April and 30 November 2027 and run for one continuous 12–24 month stay. Applicants must agree a research plan with an eligible Japanese host before applying.

Eligibility summary
Applicants must be ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom, Isle of Man or Channel Islands. They must hold a doctorate by the start of the award, obtained within six years before the award, or be scheduled to receive it before the fellowship starts. Research must be in humanities or social sciences, and a Japanese host must be arranged in advance.
Requirements
