University of Manitoba Funded PhD in Neonatal Pulmonary Biology
University of Manitoba
Professor Shyamala Dakshinamurti is recruiting a PhD student for the Neonatal Pulmonary Biology Lab at the University of Manitoba. The project studies newborn pulmonary circulation, hypoxia, vascular relaxation and cardiac contraction, with a current departmental minimum supervisor-backed stipend of CAD 23,000 per year for four years.
Professor Shyamala Dakshinamurti is recruiting a Ph.D. student to join the Neonatal Pulmonary Biology Lab at the Children's Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba and pursue the University of Manitoba's Ph.D. in Physiology and Pathophysiology.
The preferred start is January 2027 for Canadian or U.S. applicants and May 2027 for international applicants. The lab studies circulatory transition at birth and how hypoxia affects newborn pulmonary arterial relaxation and cardiac contraction. The specific project will be tailored to the selected student's strengths.
Professor Dakshinamurti's official University of Manitoba profile confirms that she heads the Neonatal Pulmonary Biology Lab, is currently accepting Ph.D. students and researches pulmonary hemodynamics, hypoxic pulmonary arteries and persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn.
Funding: the Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology states that an accepting advisor must commit to the department-approved minimum support, currently CAD 23,000 per year for four years for Ph.D. students. Students pay University of Manitoba tuition and fees and are encouraged to apply for scholarships or personnel awards that may provide additional or alternative support. This listing is therefore classified as supervisor-funded stipend support, not as a tuition-waiver scholarship.
Selection process: email a letter of interest, CV and transcript to shyamala.dakshinamurti@umanitoba.ca by September 15, 2026. Highly ranked candidates will be invited to a Zoom interview and asked for letters of reference. Selected applicants should complete the University of Manitoba graduate application by October 1, 2026, as specified in the recruitment notice.
