Mitacs Globalink Summer 2027 Research Internships at Trent University: Graph Algorithms, LLMs and Concurrent Data Structures

International undergraduates can apply for three English-language Mitacs Globalink Research Internship projects supervised by Dr Bin Guo at Trent University: generalized k-core algorithms, graph-algorithm development with LLMs, and an MCAS-based concurrent B+-tree. The 12-week internships are based in Peterborough, Ontario; apply by September 16, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. Pacific Time.
The Mitacs Globalink Research Internship 2027 student call is open. Dr Bin Guo at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario is offering three English-language computer-science research projects through the programme. The internships run in person for 12 consecutive weeks during summer 2027.
Project 52752: Generalized k-core in Complex Graphs
This project extends the k-core model beyond undirected graphs to directed, weighted, attributed, temporal, multilayer and hypergraph settings. Work includes defining suitable notions of coreness, designing incremental and decremental maintenance algorithms for dynamic updates, implementing the algorithms in C++, and evaluating scalability and correctness on synthetic and real-world graph datasets.
The ideal applicant has a computer-science or related background, an interest in graph theory, graph databases, graph algorithms and data structures, and strong C++ skills including object-oriented design, algorithm implementation and efficient memory management.
Project 52753: Graph Algorithm Design and Implementation with LLMs
This project studies how large language models can support graph-algorithm ideation, implementation, correctness reasoning, multicore performance optimisation, testing and evaluation. The main examples are k-core decomposition, k-core maintenance and other cohesive-subgraph algorithms, with methods intended to generalise to shortest paths, spanning trees and centrality algorithms.
The student will review the literature, design prompts and workflows for models such as GPT, Gemini and Claude, implement experimental frameworks, compare correctness and performance, and contribute to technical reports or research manuscripts. Strong foundations in algorithms, graphs, data structures and C++ are expected.
Project 53049: Concurrent Data Structure — B+-Tree
This project investigates Multi-Compare-and-Swap (MCAS) as a synchronisation primitive for building a simpler, verifiable and scalable concurrent B+-tree. The student will compare existing concurrent B+-tree implementations, design and implement an MCAS-based version in C++, and benchmark throughput, latency, scalability, memory overhead and correctness on multicore shared-memory systems.
The ideal applicant is interested in algorithms, data structures, concurrency and multicore systems and has strong C++ programming, object-oriented design and memory-management experience.
All three projects list a suggested start date of May 3, 2027 and indicate that the start date is flexible within the Mitacs window. Programme rules require internships to begin between May 1 and July 31, 2027 and finish as 12 consecutive weeks no later than October 31, 2027.
Important project-selection rule: applicants must select between three and ten projects and must choose projects located in at least three different Canadian provinces. These three Trent projects are all in Ontario, so selecting the three Trent projects alone does not satisfy the provincial-diversity requirement. Applicants interested in Trent must also select suitable projects in at least two other provinces.
Application deadline: September 16, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. Pacific Time. The application must show a status of “Complete” by the deadline. The Mitacs system automatically submits complete applications at the deadline and does not provide a separate Submit button.

Funding clarification: Mitacs does not publish one universal award value. Amounts and partner arrangements vary by the student's home country. The official wording is that the award contributes toward the listed costs. Funds are normally released only after the intern begins the project and is physically present in Canada, so applicants should plan for any up-front travel, visa or arrival expenses and read their eventual award letter carefully.
Eligibility summary
- Must be at least 18 years old at the time of application.
- Must be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate or combined undergraduate/master's programme at an institution eligible for the applicant's country or region.
- Must have completed at least two years of undergraduate study or be enrolled in the second year, subject to country-specific rules.
- Must have one to three semesters remaining in the programme as of fall 2027, subject to the rules for the applicant's country.
- Must meet the country- or partner-specific grade, citizenship, institution, discipline and language requirements.
- Must be fluent in the project's language. These three Trent projects are delivered in English.
- Must be available for 12 consecutive weeks in Canada, starting between May 1 and July 31, 2027.
- Must not previously have received a Mitacs Globalink Research Internship project.
- Applicants affected by Canada's research-security rules may be ineligible for projects involving sensitive technology research areas.
The 2027 programme is limited to eligible students studying in Austria, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Jordan, Mexico, Pakistan, Peru, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Tunisia, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and the United States. Eligibility is not automatic for every student in these places: consult the official country and institution list before applying. United States citizens apply through Fulbright Canada rather than the Mitacs student portal.
Requirements
- Create an account and complete the 2027 student application in the official Mitacs Globalink portal.
- Search for project IDs 52752, 52753 and 53049, or filter for Bin Guo and Trent University.
- Select a minimum of three and a maximum of ten projects across at least three Canadian provinces.
- Explain academic preparation, research interests, relevant skills and reasons for pursuing research in Canada.
- For the Trent projects, demonstrate relevant algorithm, data-structure and C++ preparation. Graph, parallel-computing, concurrency or LLM experience should be highlighted where applicable.
- Make sure the application status is “Complete” before September 16, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. Pacific Time.
- Do not contact faculty supervisors directly during the Mitacs application process; use the official portal and Mitacs helpdesk for application questions.

- One professor's reference letter following the official Mitacs reference-letter instructions.
- Academic transcripts in English or French. Documents in another language must be translated and notarised.
- Passport information. Applicants may apply without a currently valid passport but will need a passport valid until at least January 2028 if approved.
- English- or French-language proficiency evidence where required by the applicant's country or international partner.
